Ian Carr è stato all'avanguardia della scena jazz britannica per quasi quattro decenni. Auto-formazione come musicista, Carr ha svolto un ruolo importante nello sviluppo del jazz-rock fusion, giocando con John McLaughlin nei primi anni '60, formando uno dei primi gruppi inglesi elettronici jazz-rock fusion, Nucleo, nel 1969 e giocare con i la band internazionale del Regno Jazz Rock Ensemble, dal 1975. nel 1982.

Undicesimo album del gruppo che entro nella top ten nello stesso anno;Il titolo dell'album doveva inizialmente essere Yes Tor, con riferimento a una formazione geologica del sud dell'Inghilterra. La copertina fu affidata alla Hipgnosis ( uno studio fotografico e di desing specializzato nella creazione di copertine per album musicali), che propose alcune ipotesi basate su foto in bianco e nero virate al blu dei membri del gruppo. Si dice che Wakeman, per esprimere il proprio giudizio sulle foto, abbia lanciato su di esse un pomodoro preso dal proprio sandwich. Il risultato piacque più dell'originale, e si decise che il pomodoro dovesse apparire anche sulla copertina dell'album, ribattezzato coerentemente Tormato (unione di Tor e tomato, "pomodoro").
